Munch: ” - In order to create genuine art, the artist must have the courage to redeem the ideals of his own time. A new era requires a new art.”
The epitaph character in the lithograph, Self-portrait with an arm bone,1895, is depicted by coal black ink while the details in the facial shape are drawn with pencil. During Munch’s stay in Berlin, he was inspired by Vallotton’s woodcuts, especially his use of black and white contrast. One can sense the purity of thought when contemplating this lithograph.
