Self-portrait with a glass of wine was painted in 1906. In this year, Munch was extremely occupied with making sketches for the performance of Henrik Ibsen’s “Ghost” in Berlin. Literature describes this portrait with words such as “resignation”, “claustrophobia” and a feeling of “powerlessness”. We believe that Edvard Munch was simply tired.
