Starry night was painted in
1923-1924, and is one of many melancholic starry night and landscape motifs. This period
in Munchs life has been called The Ekely Period. The development of the
picture space is very interesting. The shadow in the foreground is the artists own,
which is claimed to be a symbol of Munchs loneliness confronting death. The picture
space and the horizon are built up with many spherical shapes.
