Starry night was painted in 1923-1924, and is one of many melancholic starry night and landscape motifs. This period in Munch’s life has been called “ The Ekely Period”. The development of the picture space is very interesting. The shadow in the foreground is the artist’s own, which is claimed to be a symbol of Munch’s loneliness confronting death. The picture space and the horizon are built up with many spherical shapes.
